Is Ipoh a failed City, hopefully this will start a thread to see what people feel and think. I think the success of a city can be measured by the level of it inhabitants to appreciate arts, culture and entertainment (entertainment not linked to the oldest profession of course) that kind of entertainment does very well in Ipoh.  Its the land of clubs and pubs that are littered with GROs. Anyway coming back to the main question, has Ipoh failed? based on my anology it has.   Will it ever succeed? maybe.  Its economy is still questionable as a large part of the population still earn less tham RM800.00. Then of course there are the bigger earners who have no appreciation for the arts, be they professionals or not. Ipoh still has the largest part of the population that measures success with their cars and their properties. The average Ipohan would never considers taking a holiday but would be more than happy to spend up to 50% of their salary paying instalments on their car and 30% paying their home instalments. This is very much a society that sees materialism as success. This is a society that will not spend on somethig unquantifiable, something they physically cannot take home. For four years I have now promoted art based events, its unfortunately only enjoyed by a handfull of locals and mostly the expats in Ipoh. What does this say? Ipohs tourism authorities have constantly failed to provide any tourist in this city. I think the tourism agency should just be shut since they have done a disastrous job. I remember talking to them about a music events and festivals, I also gave an officer my proposals, next thing I know the idea was replicated and implemented in KL? right down to the artises chosen. Whenever I went to the toursim office in charge of promoting the city, the stafff and officers were always away from the coutry pomoting???? I reckon they were just attending trade fairs and holidaying, this is purely based on the number of tourist that can be seen in Ipoh....Malaysia's food heaven. Anyway I hope some comments on this...
